Urban Improv

Image
The BadAss Quilters Society recently paired up with Frond Design Studios (my favorite, favorite fabrics) for an Urban Brights Challenge.  I couldn't resist the opportunity/excuse to buy more Frond Fabric, so I purchased the bundle and away I went. Now, I am NOT an art quilter.  I would love to be someday, but I'm definitely not there yet, so I'm still undecided as to whether or not I'm even going to submit the pictures of the quilt, but I do love the final result. I decided to go with improv.  I'm pretty new at improv, so it was a challenge for me, and definitely a step outside of my comfort zone.  I went with no binding, as it seemed to work better visually that way.  I quilted it myself, with a number of different motifs and techniques.  Overall I love it, even if it doesn't quite measure up to the competition! I ended up taking the pictures last night in our shop.  It's been raining for what seems like forever, so I haven't been able to get an out

A BIG BIG Day!!

I finally got my long-arm!!  I've been thinking about getting one for ages, and we actually built the room in the shop with the intention that someday my long-arm would go in there.  I was spurred on by my quilting buddy Natalie, who suggested that we go in together on one.  Well, that seemed to make a lot of sense.  She stays at home, so she could come over and use it during the day while I'm at work, and she doesn't have room for one of her own, so it benefited us both.  We saw a Nolting demonstration at a quilt sale, and we know several ladies with Noltings who love them.  In addition they're an Iowa company, so support is close by if we need it.  They had a used model that suited us perfectly, so here we are!!  I think between us we have about 15 tops waiting to be quilted, so it's going to get a work out, just as soon as we muster up enough courage to load a "real" quilt onto the machine! I'm still working out the two room system.  I know,

There hasn't been a ton of time for sewing lately, although it seems like there should have been... Saturday my daughter had two 4-H workshops, one of which was for sewing.  Frankly, she was a bit advanced for what they were doing; it was for kids who'd really never sewn anything, but she did like having a project she could finish quickly.  She decided that she LOVES the featherweight; she's never sewn such straight seams before.  I brought along another machine for someone else to use as well; I love how much 4-H is doing for kids now.  There were a bunch of volunteers to help kids learn to sew.  I finished the quilting on my Grunge mini.  Just some simple waves in the white sections to let the grunge show off.  I'll get this one bound and hung soon.  This is a BOM from the Fat Quarter Shop.  I brought it inside to work on, as it's a good one for working on for a few minutes without needing a ton of space.

March Planning

So some much overdue pictures.  This is a close up of the quilting on my pink mini for a swap, loved how it turned out! Every which way, a Moda Bakeshop post.  I have a quilting plan in mind, but I think I'm going to wait for my long-arm quilter to arrive (!!!) to execute.  Another Moda Bakeshop quilt, with my handy quilt holders.  Hard to believe this was taken in Iowa, in February!  This quilt got NO love on the website.  I'm telling myself it's because it was posted during QuiltCon.  Yeah, that's it... My Charlie Harper mini!  LOVE LOVE LOVE this one, and actually made two, so I get to keep one!  They're almost identical, I just added a layer of batting behind the owls on one of them.  Several new techniques on this one; I did some machine quilting with 12 wt thread for the owl, and embroidered the eyes.  Fun stuff! A crochet project!  My son has used and loved his baby blanket basically to shreds, so I'm making this o
